A few weeks back it was Labor Day Weekend, which meant no classes Friday to Monday! We hired a car to hit some different cities in Cali. First stop was Santa Monica, which I instantly fell in love with. The girls & I started the trip as most girls would, shopping on 3rd St Promenade. There were little stalls selling trinkets and delicate jewellery - I love checking out these stalls to find one of a kind pieces. The street was full of people buzzing around in the sun, enjoying the start of the long weekend! Another plus was that the is the beach was a 5 min walk away. Shop til you drop and when you drop - Tan!
As you can see I was dressed appropriately for shopping and the beach wearing my new T-shirt from Isabelle's Cabinet, a boutique in Seal Beach. I spent almost 2 hours raiding through their endless rails of slip dress, tops, band tees and lace bralettes all which are reasonably priced! Bonus! This super deep V cut is perfect to show off a bikini or bralette underneath. I've always loved the destroyed style but found this style pretty hard to find in high street stores in the UK which led to my DIY project a couple of months ago (here). Go for it, get scissor happy!
Being able to wander into Nasty Gal is a great feeling since normally the only access I have is online and after finally ordering to the UK, my parcel greets me with massive custom fees. Boooo. I have to admit, I much preferred the Santa Monica store to the Melrose store - there was a better selection of products and the store was a lot more spacious. If you already follow me on snapchat (@simonemcdowall), you will have seen the amazing fitting rooms too - four mirrored walls to see every angle of your outfit!
LA - THINK PINK
I finally made it to the famous Paul Smith pink wall and it was far too pretty not to snap some pics! There were bloggers, girl gangs and families at the wall getting pictures, boomerangs, videos - you name it! I already mentioned that this wall is located on Melrose Avenue from my previous post La La Land. It was so unexpectedly busy, I had no idea it would be so popular but I guess Instagram has taken over the world.
Who doesn't love a silky slip?! The moment Kendall Jenner stepped out wearing the T/Slip combo - girls everywhere fell in love! So did I - I can't get enough of the slip style and I found this in Isabelle's Cabinet too. I dressed this down with sneakers and a denim jacket around my waist for a day of shopping in LA and transitioned perfectly into the evening where we had dinner at Cecconi's. Here in California, the style is casual but chic so sneakers to a restaurant are acceptable (unless otherwise stated - check for dress code just in case!).
The slip dress is definitely a classic style which will continue to reappear in fashion with slight modifications. It has already come in and out of fashion several times in the past decade - I wonder what the next slip style will be? Whatever it is, I'm sure I'll be wearing it!
On Labor Day we headed to Malibu to have brunch at The Malibu Cafe located in the mountains. The Malibu Cafe is very family orientated with lots of games like giant chess and Jenga for the kids but also bars to have bottomless mimosas - not much of a chess player I stuck with the latter. This reminded me of country parks in Scotland just with better weather and a little more chic! There was so much to explore like the little gift shops and the lake where you can take a ride on the pedalos. Oh and not to mention the food which was to die for! I had the vegan burger made with beets and quinoa - healthy and delicious!
When I saw Olivia Palermo wear this shirt from Zara, I had to have it! Zara have nailed the fit, the collar and cuffs on this piece. This shirt’s deep cut and structured, short collar is the perfect combination for me. Leopard print is a trend this fall and I'm definitely into it. Do you guys like it? I'm slowly building up a leopard print section in my wardrobe so be prepared to see a lot more!
We explored for a couple of hours before hitting Malibu Beach for a chilled afternoon on the beach with prosecco and nibbles - so far this is the life!
